Some of the most interesting sailing ships were built at the very end of the Golden Age of Sail, and the Italian brigantine schooner Carlo is no exception. Built in the early 20th Century, when steam was already supplanting sail as the preferred method of propelling cargo vessels, Carlo features a great hull design that combined speed with cargo-carrying capacity. The combination of square sails on the front mast and schooner rig on the back maximized the winds it could utilize to drive the ship while minimizing the crew required to sail her.
