Steam Schooner Wapama Plans Added

Shipyards along the Pacific coast built more than 200 steam schooners to service the lumber industry. Of those numerous vessels, Steam Schooner Wapama is the last afloat, serving now as a museum ship. Check out her plans.

I had the pleasure of watching Don Birkholz Sr. draw these plans by hand in 1989 in Galveston, TX, along with plans for the Balclutha while I corrected British Admiralty charts at the table next to him. A gentleman, and such a talented designer. Happened onto your website and enjoyed seeing the plans again. All the best,

    • Mr, Pelly, the Wapama and the Balclutha were my favorite places to visit when I lived there. Often, I paid the admission to the Balclutha to walk her decks and explore ever inch again and again. When the Wapama was docked in Sausalito for restoration, I was caught attempting to vault the distance from the dock onto the barge she rested on. I was granted the full tour to see the efforts to stop the dry rot and all the decks below. It was sad to read today she will be dismantled. The restoration crew truly believed they could save her.
